The Deb Buettner Rotary Scholarship

Deb Buettner was a very successful mortgage broker and insurance agent. She became the first female member of the Cullman Rotary Club, as well as the first female president of the Cullman Rotary Club. She was married to Charles Buettner, and had one son, Austin. The Deb Buettner Rotary Scholarship Fund was established in her memory by her uncle, Mr. Edgar Austin, for Wallace State Community College students.

To honor her memory as a very successful businesswoman and Rotarian, Mr. Austin, who is also now deceased, requested that the recipient be involved in community service, as was Ms. Buettner. The principal motto of Rotary is “Service Above Self” with a secondary motto being “One Profits Most Who Serves Best,” both of which are good business skills practiced by Ms. Buettner.  The recipient must also be a female business major and maintain a 3.0 GPA.

  The Richard Bunis Memorial Scholarship

The Richard Bunis Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by his wife, Linda and his family for the express purpose of providing financial assistance to Wallace State Community College students. Mr. Bunis was employed with Wallace State Community College for a number of years, working primarily with students who had been dislocated or displaced from their jobs. He worked diligently to help students overcome obstacles in their pursuit of a college education in order to successfully re-enter the work force.

As a way to honor his memory and continue his work, The Richard Bunis Memorial Fund gives preference to the displaced worker to help ease the hardship of “starting over.”
